Tiger Lake and Xe Grahics: The King’s Return

AMD has just released the Ryzen 4000 chip on a 7nm process, and Intel has responded with a Tiger Lake chip, which is based on an “enhanced 10nm process”.

So this is the right time to evaluate this chip “Tiger” from Intel through the tests with the battle chicken AMD Ryzen 4000.

In terms of force, the chip line Tiger Lake includes 9 microprocessor models, from PC series to Laptop, and portable devices.

The specifications of this machine are as follows: 28W i7-1185G7 chip, with 4 cores 8 threads, clocked at 3.0Ghz, Turbo Boost to 4.8Ghz single core (Turbo boost multi-core 4.3Ghz), and integrated graphics Xe Graphics, built-in machine with 32GB of RAM.


A chip i7-1185G7 This beat its predecessor i7-1065G7 Ice Lake 25W (Note that this 11th generation i7 chip has a capacity of 28W, while with the Ice Lake series there is only one 28W chip, it is the i7-1068G7, and only on the Macbook Pro).

In addition, this 11th generation i7 chip also beat AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800U 8 core with near results.

Intel’s biggest gamble is the integrated graphics Xe Graphics which Intel claims is twice as efficient as the previous generation.

In this test we did not benchmark the AMD 4800U chip because of the Premiere Pro compatibility bug, but you can also guess the results, while AMD doesn’t support Intel’s Quick Sync.

3DMark Time Spy for i7-1185G7 up to 1,805 points (modern graphics performance test), this score clearly beat the previous i7-1065G7 (you can see the specific score on 3dmark.com), and AMD Ryzen 7 4800U underperformed with 1,450 points.

This is just the introduction of the numbers, remember the Ryzen 7 4800U has double the multiplier, the number of threads compared to the Intel house.

PCMark 10 (the actual working performance test): AMD Ryzen 7 4800U chip on par with this i7-1185G7, the corresponding score of 5,404 / 5,462 (while the i7 1065G7 chip is 4,644 according to Notebookcheck)

Cinebench R20 (the test of the ability to process the whole system graphics): Intel got 595 points in the single-core benchmark, and AMD at 474 points.

In the multi-core test, AMD outperformed Intel thanks to its superior thread multiplier than Intel (see more above Notebookcheck).

In conclusion, Intel’s Tiger Lake line completely defeated its predecessor Ice Lake in multitasking and daily tasks, proving the remarkable progress of the Intel family.

Not to mention Intel also clearly expressed its ambition of Artificial Intelligence when equipped with AI Engine DL Boost: DP4a to combine with integrated graphics card, to speed up Neral Network Inferencing (which is not 28W laptop chips every dream to have).

Although in the framework of this article, Intel beat AMD in single-core performance, but failed completely in multi-core processing. And AMD still retains the throne in the village of multithreading multi-core processing such as code compilation, Hash calculation, encryption, …
