Straws are one of the planet’s most dreadful waste items, because most of them are made of plastic and are disposable. That’s why in the US, a number of cities and states have issued a ban on the use of disposable plastic straws.
Until now, it is still a controversial ban because people have to struggle to find a new type of plastic straw to replace plastic straws.
There are a number of organic straws made from grass, bamboo or even wheat that can decompose quickly and be more environmentally friendly. But the characteristics of these tubes are that they are not durable, difficult to use and are only disposable.
Stainless steel straws are quite inconvenient, although reusable, but cleaning stainless steel straws is also a concern for many people. Imagine you walk into a milk tea shop using stainless steel straws. You will surely be hesitant to know whether the store has washed it or not, there is no residue inside the tube?
To solve this problem, Green One Lab – an incubator for sustainable products of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has researched and developed a new straw that can be easily opened and cleaned. The straw is named One Bubble Straw with an open-close joint running along the body of the tube.
When you need to use, you will close it so that the two edges of the pipe fit together to form a straw as usual. After you’re done, you can open the mount with just a single push of its hinge inward and gently detach the tube.
This innovative design allows a One Bubble Straw straw to be reused several times. You can clean it just by wiping it with a paper towel, washing it under running water or even putting it in the dishwasher. These advantages make it suitable for both individual customers and restaurants.
In terms of material, One Bubble Straw is made entirely from 100% TPE plastic, which is more recyclable and more environmentally friendly than other plastics. Once the straw is old or broken, users can bring it back to the manufacturer so they can collect, clean and recycle them into new straws.
The size of One Bubble Straw is also very handy for you to take with you. It weighs only 8g. The length of 21 cm and diameter of 1.3 cm make the straw suitable for all beverages, including milk tea in tall cups with pearls.
When you buy this straw, you will be given a very nice cloth bag to hold. In addition, the product packaging is also made from environmentally friendly paper, printed with soy ink.
Green One Lab has set up a Kickstarter site to raise funds for mass production of these straws, and they immediately passed the desired donation for the first phase of the project. As expected, the first One Bubble Straw recycling straws will be shipped in early October.
Smart design of One Bubble Straw straws
The price for a set of products including a straw and a bag with several estimates is around USD 6 (equivalent to VND 140,000). This is half the price of similar silicon straws sold on Amazon for about $ 15.
According to Green One Lab, the One Bubble Straw coupling has a durability that allows you to reuse 1,000 times. So, it will only cost 0.006 USD for a single use, equivalent to less than 140 VND. Obviously, it is a price that not only individuals but also milk tea shop owners should consider.
