At present, the name Dan Lok is a global brand. When it comes to this character, people immediately think of the leading influencer in shaping the skill economy and a sharp entrepreneur. However, not everyone knows that this $ 75 million entrepreneur has had many difficulties to be successful as now.

When Dan Lok was a child, his parents divorced and his mother chose to live in Canada. At first, Dan had a lot of trouble in his hometown of Hong Kong when he made friends with a group of bad friends. He even had to go to the police station many times because of an argument and was sponsored out by a family member.
Once, a policeman advised Dan’s father to take him out of Hong Kong because he might “fail” if he continued here. That is why he was brought with him by his mother to start a new life in Canada at the age of 14.
However, Dan does not know English and is unable to communicate with anyone. He struggled during high school and gradually became a shy student. Even so, he is very entrepreneurial. Feeling the need to take good care of his mother, Dan has come up with ways to make money.
The first business
Dan’s first income generating service is lawn mowing. He discovered business opportunities by accident. During a run, he saw an old man having difficulty mowing the lawn in his garden. Dan quickly offered to help and after he finished the job, the old man paid him $ 20.
That made him think he could turn it into a business. But the problem is that Dan doesn’t have a lawn mower to run the job. So he went back to the old man’s house with the agreement to borrow the machine, in return he would mow the lawn weekly for free for the old man. After receiving the agreement and “fishing rod”, Dan began to think about how to find customers.
Lawn mowing was Dan’s first business.
Dan’s aunt also runs a business and often prints leaflets for advertisements. Once again, he saw the opportunity: The ad was printed on only one side of the paper, so he agreed to have his lawn mower advertised on the other side. In return, he will be in charge of distributing the flyers. Then, he started walking around where he lived, stuffing leaflets through the doorways of families.
Dan was so confident that he excitedly told his mother that the phone started ringing to call the lawn mowing service. But to his surprise, no one called! After a week, as the situation was still the same, he decided to act more drastically by finding the most beautiful neighborhood and finding the house with the most overgrown grass.
Without the owner’s permission, Dan used a borrowed machine to tidy up the lawn in the garden. Finished, he sat in front of the house to wait for the owner to come home from work. The interesting thing is that the owner over-drove his house and had to come back because he didn’t realize the new look of the house. When he learned what Dan did, the man generously gave Dan $ 100.
Realizing that he could not sit still and had a client, he walked through the neighborhood and introduced himself as the man who mowed the lawn for that house. That’s how he started a business.
After a brief stint at the grocery store, Dan felt a little out of place and was drawn into the world of online selling. He seeks to sell on eBay. When he learned of an Internet-savvy neighbor, he asked him for help. Because of his trust, he gave that person borrowed money from friends and relatives to do business.
However, once, when visiting a neighbor’s house to see the progress, Dan was shocked to see that the house was empty. That was the first bitter lesson he learned.

After taking on a debt of $ 150,000 at the age of 20 from the scam, over the next three years, he opened 13 different companies and one by one went bankrupt. All of these experiences also motivated him to learn more about Internet business.
The first big breakout
After reading a book on marketing, Dan became obsessed with the field. Digging deeper, he learned about marketing expert Alan Jacques. He started researching sales letters and attended some of Alan’s workshops to meet “idols”.
Once, Dan boldly invited Alan for lunch and they talked for hours. However, when asked to be a mentor, Alan refused. With experience of failure many times, Dan is not discouraged. He went to Alan’s office continuously for a month, doing everything he could to prove his usefulness, including picking up trash in the office.
Finally, when Alan agreed, Dan dropped out of school to learn a new job: write a sales letter. Although he did not make much money, a year of being guided by Alan was worth millions of dollars to Dan. Under Alan’s guidance, he started to provide marketing services. In 1 year, his customers earned millions of dollars from sales letters. At the age of 22, Dan sold each of his projects for $ 10,000.

Become a millionaire and retire
Despite being successful as a copywriter, Dan recognized another need. Many of his client companies, after receiving the products, ask how to use them effectively. From here, Dan opened his marketing consulting service.
Just a short while later, he made enough money to pay off the $ 150,000 debt he was tricked by his old neighbor. In addition to business, Dan also invests in real estate. Profits from here can help him live a full life. So he decided to retire when he became a millionaire at the age of 27.
In the beginning, Dan used his earnings to travel for months and “plow movies”. However, just a few months later, he felt bored. Then he turned to ask Alan’s advice. He does not want to continue “working” but also does not want to live meaninglessly.
Alan and another mentor directed Dan toward teaching and speaking about his expertise. Dan is currently running an online course aimed at tackling the problem of mobile sales.
