My Neighbor Totoro is a classic animation film of Studio Ghibli. Written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, the film tells the story of two young girls Satsuki and Mei, who both move to a regional home with their father to get closer to their hospitalized mother. The sisters discover that the nearby forest is home to a mysterious creature named Totoro, whom they soon make friends and have magical adventures together.
Although released in 1988, the hit film did not lose its appeal because Studio Ghibli created a work of art so attractive with empathetic storytelling that appealed to viewers. The film is loved not only by children, but also adults who can find something for themselves.
Have you ever visited Satsuki and Mei’s house in real life?
In Nagakute, Japan, you can visit a real-life version of the house from My Neighbor Totoro.
Animation studio Studio Ghibli is known for describing real-life things in great detail. And this Nagakute house successfully depicts one of the most famous films from Studio Ghibli – My Neighbor Totoro.
It was built in 2005 as part of the 2005 World Fair. That year, the theme of the 185-day event was Natural Intelligence. Among many international pavilions, a full-scale replica of the 1950s home from this popular 1988 cartoon movie stands out among the crowd.
Looks very similar to the house in the cartoon.
Even with the interior inside.
Even small details are carefully calculated to recreate the house in the film.
The house has a father’s study room.
The room is full of books with a crooked table lamp …
The house is located in Aichi Commemoration Park, designed by Goro, son of Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Goro is also a filmmaker. However, due to copyright issues, Totoro could not appear in the park, despite the uncanny resemblance to the exhibit mascot. The 2005 World Fair ended fifteen years ago, and in 2006 the house was reopened for public viewing.
The kitchen is equipped with pots, ladles and other utensils.
The windows and walls are also a mirror image of the animation.
And the interior perfectly recreates Japanese family life from the middle to the late 1950s.
Visitors to Satsuki and Mei’s home are welcome to explore the space freely, they can go inside the closet, drawers and chests (just like the two sisters in the movie did when they got home.)
In the true replica of the home, visitors are free to explore the space they want.
And look through the closets, drawers and chests.
There is a well outside the house in the animation.
The well was also arranged in the real house.
