OnePlus Nord Review: Not outstanding, but good all-round

On August 29, OnePlus has officially entered the Vietnamese market, marking a new milestone after 4 years of absence. On the return to the Vietnamese market this time, OnePlus launched two of its latest smartphones: OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus Nord.

OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 8 Pro “welcome” Vietnamese users

Previously, there were many rumors about OnePlus going back to the Vietnamese market in the end of this year with the main product line being the OnePlus 8 Pro. However, because the OnePlus brand is still a rather strange name to most popular users in Vietnam, the “offering” of a machine with a price of up to 23 million VND will be an extremely difficult thing. for OnePlus if it wants to occupy a small part of the smartphone market in Vietnam.

Therefore, OnePlus has made a smarter move: Launching both the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus Nord, a device in the near-high-end segment and promises to be the main OnePlus product line in the Vietnamese market. .

The story of the high-end segment in Vietnam

If in the cheap, mid-range segment, big and small brands compete for each “piece of cake” market share, which can be named big names like Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi … in the segment High-end (about 10 to 15 million VND), this is a pretty miss-sized segment, high-end is not true, but the price is not cheap at all.

In this segment, we can see quite a few models sold by manufacturers, even if they are sold, sales are not outstanding. OPPO itself, the brand “in the same house” with OnePlus, has appeared in the Vietnamese market for a long time, and has no intention of hitting heavily on this low price segment, but only focuses on the price segment. cheap and mid-range (OPPO A and Reno series are proof).

In such a less competitive segment, will the OnePlus Nord perform the feat?

This will depend a lot on what the OnePlus Nord can do. For a smartphone that costs up to 14 million dong like OnePlus Nord, users will be demanding in a machine with such a high price. Responding to user expectations, the OnePlus Nord is not a smartphone that excels in every factor or has an attractive level of performance over price, but it is a comprehensive smartphone for everything.

OnePlus Nord – Not outstanding, but good all-round

Why would I rate the OnePlus Nord a “not out” smartphone? Indeed, at OnePlus Nord, we can hardly find anything that makes OnePlus Nord a superior smartphone in this price segment.

If OPPO is always featured in the camera element, especially the selfie camera with many unique features, even has super-fast SuperVOOC 2.0 charging, or Xiaomi has an attractive performance over price, then with OnePlus Nord, the device gives a very normal, normal experience in almost all factors, from the screen, camera, fast charging to battery life …

However, ordinary things are inherently good things, don’t we always want a normal life? OnePlus Nord does well in every respect, and users can count on it.

Unlike the “brother” OPPO Reno, the OnePlus Nord is equipped with a more advanced glossy glass back with curved sides. This design is indeed a very ordinary design, but it gives a very good grip experience, both luxurious and sturdy, not rickety like smartphones with plastic backs.

Of course, in the lower segment, the back of the OnePlus Nord is not designed as matte as the OnePlus 8 Pro. In return, the feeling of holding OnePlus Nord in your hand is better due to the lighter machine. For those who always appreciate the lightweight and use two smartphones at the same time as me, the OnePlus Nord I appreciate more in this factor.

Or the OnePlus Nord is simply a smartphone for female users

The OnePlus Nord’s display is also nothing short of striking. The device is equipped with a 6.44 inch Fluid AMOLED screen with Full HD + resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. This screen has a “mole” design with 32MP + 8MP dual selfie camera, it can be seen that it is quite similar to the previous OPPO Reno3 series.

The “mole” design has now become a popular design that appears on nearly every mid-to-high-end smartphone.

Due to the use of the screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, the experience of using OnePlus Nord is very smooth, especially when combined with the OxygenOS platform, which has always been rated as the smoothest user interface on Android.

The in-display fingerprint sensor is also an indispensable feature. This fingerprint sensor provides fast and accurate unlocking speed

The only thing that makes me unhappy with the design of the OnePlus Nord is that the screen of the device is not designed with two curved edges. Compared to OPPO Reno4 Pro which has a lower price, it is clear that the OnePlus Nord’s screen (not talking about display quality) is not appreciated by me. The curved edge screen makes for an easier swipe experience, especially with Back or Home gestures

The camera continues to be a “normal” element of the OnePlus Nord. The machine has a cluster of 4 main cameras including: 48 MP f / 1.8 wide-angle camera, 8 MP f / 2.3 super wide-angle camera, 5 MP f / 2.4 depth-measuring camera and 2 MP f / 2.4 macro camera.

Photo taken from the main camera of OnePlus Nord. Overall, like the OnePlus 8 Pro, the photo produced by the Nord camera tends to be realistic and the color is a bit lighter than most other smartphones on the market. The dynamic range is quite good and the detail is quite good. In terms of night and portrait photography, the camera also handles quite well, night shots with less noise, bright enough and portrait photos are quite good at separating the background from the subject, although there are still flaws.

And here is a photo taken from the selfie camera. It also has beauty modes that can “flick” your face smoother. The photo from the selfie camera also has realistic colors and is slightly pale

In terms of configuration, although at the present time, OnePlus Nord is a mid-range / high-end smartphone with the most powerful performance with Snapdragon 765G chip (in Vietnam only), but with price. The high level of performance over the price of the device is not very attractive

OnePlus Nord’s benchmark score with AnTuTu and Geekbench 5. The configuration is strong enough to smoothly fight today’s heavy games.

With a strong configuration, combined with an optimized ultra-smooth OxygenOS platform, OnePlus Nord becomes an Android smartphone with a smoothness comparable to iPhone. OxygenOS interface is also designed in a minimalistic style that is not flashy, almost the same as the original Android. This is considered the “heart” of OnePlus smartphones

In terms of common ground in the price segment of 10 – 15 million VND, OnePlus Nord is the best smartphone that users can look for. Some competitors like OPPO Reno4 Pro lose in factors such as design, performance, or like Vivo X50 Pro with similar configuration, it costs up to 20 million … However, There is still one point that users should consider when choosing to buy OnePlus Nord.

5G – Is it really necessary?

The OnePlus Nord’s high price comes in part from the built-in 5G modem. Although at the present time, 5G mobile network technology has not been officially deployed in Vietnam, but we can see many smartphones are equipped with 5G network support as a “coin. direction to the future “, and so did OnePlus Nord.

Should investing in 5G on a non-high-end machine?

However, investment in 5G networks at the present time is still something quite far away. Due to the influence of COVID-19, the deployment of 5G network in Vietnam will be delayed for a long time. According to some sources, it may not be until the middle of next year that carriers begin to cover 5G widely. Therefore, it is not reasonable to spend a large amount of money to buy a device that supports 5G but cannot be used at the present time.

OnePlus can learn from OPPO, bringing a non-5G version of OnePlus Nord to the Vietnamese market to help reduce the price of the machine like the OPPO Reno4 Pro.

Should I buy the OnePlus Nord?

If you are willing to invest in 5G networks and do not need to upgrade in 1-2 years, the OnePlus Nord 5G will be a worthy choice in the mid-range / high-end segment because such as I mentioned above: This is a good all-round smartphone.

If not too financially rich, as well as not necessary to use 5G, a few other models in the same segment, even cheaper, like OPPO Reno4 Pro will be the right smartphone for you. Or simply you need a device with strong performance and trade-offs in many factors, POCO F2 Pro 5G will be the best choice when it comes to performance over cost.
