Applicants first need to have a master’s degree in science, engineering or math (STEM) or have studied for a STEM degree for at least two years; If you are an airplane pilot, the path to becoming an astronaut is also very wide. Applicants will need at least two years of professional experience; In case you are a pilot, there must be at least 1,000 flight hours as the captain.
And this is the first time candidates will be required to complete the two-hour online test. The tests were extremely difficult and highly competitive: in January, NASA saw a record number of candidates reaching 18,000, but only 11 were selected.

NASA is expected to select the next class in mid-2021 and candidates will then begin participating in a two-year training program at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
The courses will include classes on how to navigate the Universe at NASA’s Underwater Laboratory, robot control classes and the International Space Station system. In addition, candidates will also learn how to operate a T-38 training aircraft, learn Russian, familiarize themselves with the basic knowledge of Artemis – the program to return astronauts to the Moon in 2024. .
A handful of privileged people will join the team of about 500 astronauts once in space; these are the first preparations for the process of sending astronauts to ISS on US-made rockets, then returning to the Moon and on to Mars in the 2030s.
