Calligraphy means good writing. But according to Hoang’s explanation, more than beautiful words, it is the art of harmoniously combining writing and decoration (drawing, inlaid with gold, mosaic …) related to the words. Hoang officially fell in love with the calligraphy when he was a freshman, but in fact his love for this subject was accidentally cultivated and nurtured by his grandfather since childhood.

Hoang said that his grandfather was from the old generation, fluent in both Sino-Nom, French and national language. He has many professions, from jeweler, medicine dispenser, to teacher. So he kept in the house a lot of manuscripts related to recipes for making medicines, how to raise animals, growing plants, …

At that time, Hoang’s brother, who was a calm person, often read Kieu’s tales and literature while he was lulled to sleep in a hammock. As for him, he is hyperactive and mischievous, so he put in a number of frameworks such as writing practice, making crafts, binding books … Gradually, his love for the letters seeped in Hoang during his school days, and he has always preferred to write by hand over writing text on the computer.

By the time he went to university, Hoang began to seriously study the art of writing. In the early days, like walking in the dark without a flashlight, Hoang had to grop for himself to watch online videos, then buy pens and write along. He also works in many outside jobs such as tutor, translator, … to afford the purchase of necessary study tools.

“Of course the most difficult was not money, but in Vietnam at that time, nothing was available: No schools, no books, teachers, groups … I just went online to study, anywhere Understand, the email asked a few foreigners, some people feel annoyed, others still open up and answer.

Fortunately, my English is good so I read the document myself. Then I went to Instagram to interact with like-minded people. If I could not share with Vietnamese friends, I could share them with foreign friends “, Hoang said.

Hoang remembers the first money he earned from this passion around his second year at university. Hoang designed the signature and successfully posted it on a foreign website for freelancers. That amount is only about 5 USD, after subtracting all kinds of expenses Hoang received about 3 USD. The amount is small but enough to motivate him on his own special journey.

Thanks to the spirit of inquisitive, seriously pursuing his passion, in his third year of university, Hoang began to bring his knowledge to those who wish to learn the calligraphy subject. And in the last year, he went abroad to teach for the first time, also the first time the boy born in 1993 was allowed to fly.

The 2-week period of teaching in Singapore and Indonesia made Hoang more determined to pursue the calligraphy to the end, no longer having to wonder and think.

“I studied Foreign Trade and my parents also wanted to graduate from school to find a stable job. Feeling that I did not know which direction to choose, going abroad created the motivation for me to quickly define my future path. I know myself.” can make money from reaching outside but not in the village anymore “, Hoang recalled.

From the beginning as Singrapore and Indonesia, until now, Hoang has brought his class to 12 countries around the world, including places where calligraphy developed brilliantly such as America, Japan, Korea …

Of course the work looks leisurely at first glance, but the reality is very pressure. The 9x boy said that every time he goes abroad, a course can last for 3-5 days, every day must work non-stop from 9am to 6pm, then exchange, talk show to 10am. night. This is not to mention the time traveling by car or on public transport.

“But above all, the trips give me good energy, because I can share stories with many fellow believers. There, the students are also more open, people are openly sharing, commenting, not there. “Students are afraid of teachers” culture like Vietnam “, Hoang shared.

Up to now, in addition to teaching, Hoang has also accepted to write to many individuals and businesses if they have a need. The 9x boy revealed that he had written for famous fashion brands such as Hermes, Gucci or YSL in media events and product introduction. Most recently, Hoang accepted to cooperate with Crane, a hundred years old brand of card printing in the US.

A special point is that all art writings are made by Hoang with a pen produced by himself, exactly like the English saying “A penman makes his own pen”.

When he first studied calligraphy, Hoang bought pens from outside to practice writing. However, the price of nearly 1 million dong / wooden pen is too high compared to the income of a second and third year student, and Hoang came up with the intention of producing pens by himself. He found to buy a lathe, then went to the village to buy wood, then went to Youtube to learn the procedures by himself.

Those are the days when the small room was dusty day and night in the wood dust, the neighbors constantly complained because of the noise, and the crude pens were only polished with Olive oil.

However, over time, Hoang equipped with many other machines such as grinders, polishing machines … He also researched and learned special techniques in the pen production process such as lacquer, inlaid pearls. .. As a result, production time is reduced and product quality is increasing. During the time teaching abroad, many students and partners asked to buy pens made by Hoang. Gradually, this becomes one of the main sources of income for him.

“It’s a bit practical, but making a pen can help me earn money and satisfy my passion. The pen is produced by me, so I understand the tools in my hand better, the handwriting is also more god. a little bit of the handle but the feeling of writing is very different, like riding a bicycle, the saddle height is different. Hoang shared.

Up to now, Hoang estimates that he has produced around 4,000 pens, of which the most expensive model to reach customers is 450 USD (about 10 million VND). Such patterns often have designs in mosaic and lacquer, which require a lot of effort and time, so the selling price is higher. As for the normal models, will cost from 100 to 200 USD.

With a contrasting wood color scheme, his products are enthusiastically welcomed by the calligraphy community. According to the revelation, on average, Hoang sells 1 pen a day, and for the whole month it is about 30 pens. He will sell to foreign customers through his own websites and e-commerce floors, while Vietnamese customers often come to buy in person for direct consultation.

But Hoang is quite a picky salesman, if not “chubby”. Hoang likes to sell to knowledgeable people, that is, they know what they want and need, rather than new customers. Because according to Hoang explained, it is not certain that new customers really understand all about pens, but sometimes they just want the craftsman to make a work according to their liking.

“I think each pen should have a certain percentage for the craftsman’s creativity. And when the work reaches the user, they will really appreciate the worker’s effort. If only the craftsman are considered human. I will refuse to process according to the request. I often refuse customers. I think the revenue coming from customers really understands will be more durable than the income from temporary customers “, Hoang shared.

Although he did not disclose the detailed income figures, Hoang said that he was able to live comfortably from his passion without being too concerned about money. However, Hoang did not buy houses, cars or real estate. Instead, he constantly reinvests in new courses, actively goes abroad to look for good masters to constantly improve his level and knowledge with calligraphy.

Since the first year of university up to now, Dao Huy Hoang has pursued a writing and writing career for nearly a decade. This guy can include the remarkable achievements of this guy such as 3 consecutive years of spending a calligraphy scholarship of the United States (a 1-week scholarship, covered for plane costs, accommodation), becoming a character on magazines. International reputation as Pen Work, Type …, was dubbed the master of the calligraphy in Vietnam.

2019 is the year Hoang continues to be active with the opening of the first solo exhibition in Hanoi, working as a talk show in Ho Chi Minh City, teaching in Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Japan, the US and opening short-term exhibitions at these countries.

This year, because of the influence of the Covid-19 translation, Hoàng can only teach online and continue to write. His income is also reduced by 30-50%, but it is revealed that he still has enough living and has a separate amount to improve his knowledge.

In return, Hoang has time to prepare works for the 10th anniversary exhibition, scheduled to be held in 2021, and complete the calligraphy related books.

“Achievements that make me most proud? Probably teaching. I like to teach very much because I am the type of artist who likes to transmit knowledge, not who loves to compose”.

“My students have been studying for 6-7 years now. Of course not continuously because there are short breaks but I see them improving and trying. Finally they also write very well, all kinds of things suing to receive writing for brands. Seeing students making progress and going up is my pride “Hoang confided.

In the next year, besides planning a 10-year exhibition, the 9x boy wishes to learn more Japanese lacquer art to improve his pen-making skills. Longer term, Hoang hopes to publish a few guidebooks to calligraphy, building a strong foothold in the international calligraphy community and bringing this art subject to more audience classes.
