An additional scene in the 1999 anime version
Togashi Yoshihiro is the author of popular comics such as Yu Yu Hakusho (Journey to the Underworld), Level E. and most recently Hunter x Hunter. Togashi’s fans are no stranger to the unique story style and he is not afraid to include details that are not too suitable for the teenage series.
He also very often “show off” his hobbies, plugging details related to his life interests in each story frame. One of the best examples is the strange painting style mentioned in Yorkshin, chapter 84: Feitan tortures a member of the Beast.
The book that Feitan is reading: Trevor Brown
If you look closely, you can see that the cover of the book that Feitan is reading has a name: Trevor Brown. A random name? No, not at all! That is the name of a real life painter.
One of Trevor Brown’s paintings
Trevor Brown is an English painter from London but has lived and worked in Japan since 1994. His work explores mainly on the issue of sexual deviations such as pedophilia (or pedophilia), craving, slavery, punishment, sadism, masochism, etc … and other categories of cult and passion. Other elements such as Japanese purity, violence, suicide, hatred of women, and popular culture were also incorporated in his paintings.
The majority of the main characters in his works are girls
Although the subject of his works seems to be picky to the viewers, it cannot be denied that this is a famous painter. The proof is that from two years after starting his business in Japan (in 1996) he has up to 10 picture albums published as of 2015, twenty-seven regular exhibitions almost every year since 1995. Trevor Brown has even a website of its own operating in the English language.
Feitan Art Gallery: Forbidden Fruit
As noted in the photo, the painting Feitan is reading is the Forbidden Fruit, which was published in 1997 and summarizes pictures of girls and dolls. In 2001 this album was reprinted with a new cover. This is his second painting from the start.
The form Feitan used to torture members of the Beast
The way of torturing the Beastman member is quite similar to one of his famous paintings: Find Candace in the My Alphabet picture series first published in 1999, and published three times. This painting also became the cover for the Find Candace album CD of electronic musician Venetian Snares in 2003.
Trevor Brown’s paintings are often re-cosplayed (Source: fokken_greed)
In addition, his paintings are often cosplayed again, ordered as covers of music CDs or printed into numerous collectibles. To include a unique artist like this in his work, the author Togashi must have a love for very “weird” things, right?
