Along with the two smartphones, Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung recently launched the new true wireless headset Galaxy Buds +. Galaxy Buds + is an upgraded version of the Galaxy Buds from last year, which hasn’t changed much in appearance and basic features but brings significant upgrades in sound quality, battery life and microphone.
The listed price of Galaxy Buds + is 149 USD, 20 USD higher than the first generation Buds. So, what’s remarkable about Buds + and is the difference of $ 20 worth it?
Boxed mode of Buds + is no different from Buds

Accessories inside the box include headset, charger box, USB-C cable and two pairs of replacement eartips
The basic appearance and features of Galaxy Buds + are unchanged from Galaxy Buds
For those who are not tech-savvy, they can hardly distinguish Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds +. Because the external design of Galaxy Buds + is unchanged compared to Galaxy Buds. The headset is still in-ear design and fits in the ear of the user, which is considered less ludicrous than AirPods. Galaxy Buds + charging box is also in the form of tablets, unchanged compared to the old generation.

Not only looks, Galaxy Buds + also inherits all the prominent features on Galaxy Buds. On the surface of each headset is a touchpad, allowing users to quickly perform tasks such as playing / pausing, playing previous / next songs, receiving / rejecting calls, adjusting volume and activate “Ambient Sound” mode.

Buds + touchpad allows users to perform some quick actions.
Talking more about Ambient Sound, this mode blends the sound that the headset emits with the sound of the outside environment, so that users can identify sounds around them.
In case of charging, Galaxy Buds + also supports charging via USB-C or wireless charging via Qi standard. This is a big advantage of Samsung products, because to get wireless charging on AirPods, users will have to spend up to 199/249 USD. Another competitor is the Sony WF-1000XM3 which doesn’t even support wireless charging.

Lack of active noise cancellation, but it should not blame Samsung
One feature that the Galaxy Buds lacks is Active Noise Canceling (ANC). This makes many people regret, because ANC is a feature that is being increasingly used by many manufacturers for their products. The two most popular true wireless headphones are Apple’s AirPods Pro and Sony’s WF-1000XM3, which have ANCs, which makes Samsung’s products less attractive.
However, users can hardly blame Samsung for not integrating ANC on Buds +, because:
– The price of Buds + (149 USD) compared to AirPods Pro (249 USD) and WF-1000XM3 (230 USD) is much lower. Buds + is on par with Apple’s “no Pro” AirPods, and AirPods don’t have ANCs either. Therefore, the Buds + without ANC is perfectly reasonable.
– More importantly, even though Buds + doesn’t have ANC, its in-ear design still helps with relatively good soundproofing. When wearing Buds + under normal environmental conditions, users will be hard to hear the surrounding sound.

Buds + in-ear design creates relatively clear sound effects, though not comparable to ANC
So what does Galaxy Buds + upgrade?
Without ANC, in return Buds + Samsung improved three equally important factors.
First, Samsung overcomes the biggest drawback of the first generation Buds, which is the mic quality. Previously, most Galaxy Buds users complained about the poor quality of the headset, the other side of the phone could not hear what Buds users were saying. The new Buds + now has 3 mics, which is more than the 2 mics of Buds and hence better recording quality.
Second, Samsung continues to enhance the sound quality on Buds +. Buds + uses a dual driver design, with bass (bass) and treble (responsible for each driver). This design is usually only used on expensive headphones, and it is very surprising that Buds + is equipped with it.

Third, the battery life is significantly upgraded by Samsung on Buds +. According to the announcement from Samsung, users can listen to music continuously with Buds + for a record time of 11 hours (a total of 22 hours when combined with the charging box). This is a significant leap forward compared to the first generation Buds (6 hours) and completely outperforms AirPods (5 hours) as well as AirPods Pro (4.5 hours).

Continuous use of up to 11 hours is a huge strength of Buds + compared to rivals
Battery life can be considered as the “money” feature of Buds +, especially suitable for those who need to use the headset continuously for a long time, for example on an airplane.
Summary: Galaxy Buds + is a value upgrade compared to Galaxy Buds
Despite the absence of ANCs, that doesn’t make Galaxy Buds + a bad upgrade. On the other hand, improvements in sound quality, microphone and battery life make Buds + a very valuable choice, especially considering the difference of only $ 20 compared to the first generation Buds.
