In the vast film world, there are many works adapted from the best-selling novels and short stories and resonated in the audience. Not only does it bring in huge profits for producers, such blockbusters also enrich the popular culture and sometimes also help the reputation of the original series fly higher, fly further, be many people know.
However, recently, designer / illustrator Matt Stevens has implemented a project that is a bit of a trend reversal: Turn his favorite movie series into the covers of old and impressive novels. and just reflect the movie script. This project is called “Good Movies As Old Books” (roughly translated: When the movies worth watching turn into old books) and currently has nearly 100 works, all of which come from Matt’s imagination. .
Share with Bored Panda, Matt said: “I have been working on this project since the beginning of this year. I really love feature films and want to create something that allows me to explore new illustration styles, just like a creative exercise. But the more I did it again, the more I decided that as long as I was happy, I would continue to paint”.
He continued to confess: “I’m like a child artist, that’s why I can’t do anything. The turning point came to me when I was exposed to the definition of a logo, and understood its role. It really inspired me to pursue and make a living by creating a profession. Previously I was a designer working on branding (including logo design and brand identity). I became independent about 8 years ago to focus more on this area, as well as improve my illustration skills.”.
When Matt shared about his inspiration and how he developed the idea for “Good Movies As Old Books”, Matt said: “Usually I would think of the concept I want to create first. I recalled the happenings in the movie and let it hang in my mind. Inspiration will come at a time when you least expect it. Sometimes, just by chance to see an old book, I can come up with an idea, and keep experimenting, creating multiple versions to see which one is best for me. I also work flexibly, meaning I’m ready to change my initial mindset during the drawing process. Therefore, there are many works that I publish that are not really similar to my original intention”.
Matt continued to share more in-depth expertise: “I will start with light strokes to shape the idea and layout on the page. Whenever something’s good, I’ll move on to drawing machines, using Photoshop or Procreate, sometimes Adobe Illustrator, to create vector artwork. Each of these tools has their own strengths, and depending on the project, I will make the most reasonable choice. And then comes the finishing step, coloring and description of the material (mostly of old book covers).”.
Receiving a lot of support from the online community, Matt then implemented a project on kickstarter with the main product is a collection of 100 paintings in “Good Movies As Old Books”. All are printed with high quality and will be a great gift for movie lovers around the world. He hopes to raise $ 30,000 from the community, and now there are 519 participants supporting and contributing to $ 35,097.
