In fact, the team believes the mineral comes from a mining site located 30km northeast of Tikal. In this quarry area, volcanic rock forms an aquifer capable of holding pockets of fresh water. Geographer Nicholas Dunning at the University of Cincinnati is no stranger to the area, having repeatedly experimented there.
