62 million downloads in just one week, the Covid-19 pandemic is helping online applications to ‘rise’.

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people around the world to stay home, companies mostly handling work around online software supporting meetings and conferences.

In just 7 days from March 14-21, online applications supported the function for business meetings and conferences leading the way with 62 million downloads worldwide. The data was recorded according to a report published by analyst firm App Annie on Monday.

The number of downloads of online apps has witnessed unprecedented growth. The number of apps dedicated to business meetings and conferences downloaded by iOS and Android users during the week has increased by 45% from the previous week and by 90% compared to the weekly average in 2019.

Zoom is currently leading the charts for applications that provide solutions for online meetings and conferences in both February and March. But according to a similar report from analyst firm Sensor Tower, number Zoom search traffic on the App Store did not spike, which reflects that people know the tool directly from employers or from schools.

In addition to apps focused on supporting business meetings, people are also downloading video apps for entertainment purposes, according to the App Annie report. Houseparty, a social networking application that stores video chat rooms, has seen an increase in downloads across Europe. The surge has been evident in countries hit hard by corona viruses like Spain (where Houseparty’s downloads are 2,360 times higher than the 2019 weekly average) or Italy ( where Houseparty saw 423 times more downloads than in 2019).

Houseparty, a social networking application that stores video chat rooms, has seen an increase in downloads across Europe.

App Annie in her report said: “This is really an unprecedented difficult time for the world, but the opposite is extremely dynamic time for mobile applications. We see a change in daily consumer behavior in almost every field. ”

Both Annie and Sensor Tower provide unique insights into app download metrics that official vendors like the iOS App Store and Google Play Store do not publish. Analysis companies do so by collecting data through other unrelated applications they own, including VPN services and ad-blocking browsers.
